Abstract
The perception and experience of menarche and menstruation during adolescence can impact a woman¡¯s lifetime of physical and mental health. Although studies have been conducted, there is little information about menstrual products written in Korean. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the use and information sources of menstrual hygiene products among female adolescents and young adults in Korea. To that end, we conducted an online survey targeted at females aged 14-24. The study found that disposable sanitary pads were the most common menstrual hygiene product among adolescents. However, about 11% of middle/high school students and 23.2% of college/university students and young adults used tampons and 2.5% of middle/high school students and 6.7% of college/university students and young adults used menstrual cups. Respondents reported that tampons or menstrual cups were used because they were more comfortable than disposable sanitary pads. Furthermore, the study found that female adolescents and young adults got information about menstruation from family, friends, the internet, and social media. However, most respondents reported that they wanted more information on menstrual hygiene products. The findings indicated that it is necessary to develop more accurate and various information about menstrual hygiene products and their safety and to educate young females about menstruation management.
